Ghana Gas detects leakage on its pipeline

  • lcThe Ghana National Gas Company (Ghana Gas) has detected a leakage in one of the segments of its 111-kilometer pipeline.

The defect was detected during an integrity test of the pipes from Atuabo in the Ellembelle District to Shama in the Shama District in readiness for final flow.

Officials however, say there is no cause for alarm since the leakage was expected and engineers are currently working on the affected segment.

They also said the gas being used for the testing was part of the natural gas supplied to the Volta River Authority (VRA) from Nigeria and not the gas from the Jubilee Field. The volume of gas for the testing has since been contained.

According to the Dr. Ben Asante, Consultant and Director of Technical Operations at Ghana Gas, engineering of the magnitude of the national gas infrastructure had to be subjected to integrity tests.

He emphasised that the leakage was expected and that the discovery of leakage on only one of the segments was the confirmation that Ghana Gas was very meticulous.

He explained that, the 111-km pipeline was divided into several segments to ensure that, in such situations, it would be easy to be isolated and worked on.

“I must say that the essence of the testing is to detect if there were leakages, and I can tell you that, we were expecting more leakages, but due to the time devoted to quality and safety we had only one minor pin-hole leakage which is currently been rectified,” he said.

Dr. Asante said it was important to note that the move by Ghana Gas was also a pro-active one which was in the best interest of the country as the facility at Aboadze awaits the final flow.
