A new 450megawatts-capacity Karpowership, named OSMAN KHAN, is expected to arrive in Ghana tomorrow.

After it is successfully installed and commissioned, the 225-megawatts power barge, stationed at Tema Port, will be decommissioned and moved out of Ghana.
This is because the Government of Ghana, through the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), entered into a 10-year agreement to procure power produced by a 450MW ship from Karpowership Ghana, a subsidiary of Karadeniz Holding of Turkey.
Information available to The Finder indicates that the incoming 450MW is a ship whereas the existing 225MW is a power barge.
    World’s largest powership
The incoming 450MW is the world’s biggest powership. According to the information, the new 450MW ship is self-propelled with minimum noise.
Karpower sources confirmed the information and explained that installation is expected to take between three and four weeks.
Ghana Grid Company (GRIDco) will supervise the installation of the ship. The sources told The Finder that once the 450MW is connected to the national grid, both ship and existing barge will work simultaneously for about a month.
They explained that when the 450MW ship is well stabilised, the 225MW barge would be decommissioned and moved out of Ghana.
    Official commissioning
According to the company sources, the official commissioning ceremony of the ship would be done only after a successful installation and all rests prove successful. This is the 13th Karpowership in operation worldwide, and 20 of its kind are under construction.
    Size of the ship
It measures approximately 50 metres wide, with a length of 300m.
    Dual fuel
It has dual fuel engines – utilising low sulphuric Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) and natural gas.
    About Karpowership
Karpowership is a subsidiary of Karadeniz Holding, a sector pioneer in innovative energy projects that has been operational for the last 20 years.
The company is the only builder, owner and operator of Karpower fleets in the world.

Karpowership began operations in Ghana in 2015, and the current 225MW barge is named Karadeniz Aysegul Sultan
