  • mining communityAS part of its corporate social responsibility, the Adansi Gold Company Limited, a mining company exploring gold in the Amansie West District in the Ashanti Region, has provided the twin community of Koninase and Nkran with places of convenience to support health and sanitation needs of the people.

That was made possible after consultations with the elders and opinion leaders from Nkran and Koninase under the auspices of the Community Consultative Committee.

Apart from that, the company has also presented 20,000 exercise books to the Koninase-Nkran District Assembly Primary and Junior High schools to support teaching and learning in the twin community. The gesture is to alleviate the burden on parents, who cannot afford to provide learning material for their children.

While the cost of the two acqua-privies is US$ 78,540, the company spent US$ 2, 000 on the exercise books.

At a ceremony at Nkran, the General Manager, Operations, of the Adansi Gold Company Limited, Mr Charles Amoah, said the gesture demonstrated the commitment of the company to the sustainable development of the communities that were directly affected by its “Obotan Operations.”

He mentioned Koninase, Nkran, Dadease and Kwankyeabo as communities which were directly impacted by its operations, and that though the company was only exploring, it would support the affected communities in its catchment area.

Mr Amoah said the company was committed to the sustainability of the environment. He noted that countries like Malaysia, South Korea, Hong Kong, India and China that put premium on education development were able to lift their people from poverty and illiteracy and that the company would support the Government of Ghana to provide education infrastructure and motivate teachers to train a large number of the youth as the country tried to acheive a middle-income status.

Mr Amoah indicated that apart from the presentation of exercise books, the company had, under its Education Support Programme, initiated extra classes for the Koninase-Nkran catered well for farmers whose farms had been DA schools since the beginning of 2012/2013 academic year and teachers taking part in  the classes were paid some allowances to motivate them to give their best to enhance quality education.

He further said the company had renovated district, Mr Peter Afoakwa Asante, thanked the a clinic at Nkran, rehabilitated the 11.2- kilometre stretch of road from Nkran to neighbouring villages, and as part of its long  term plans, it had established a trust fund to take care of the sanitation, health and education of the peolpe in the mining area.

The Community Relations Officer, Mr Eric Darko, said a conflict resolution committee had been set up as a subcommittee of the Community Consultation Committee to take charge of crop compensation and land acquisition matters. he said the company had catered well for farmers whose farms had been affected by the exploration activities.
