  • Mr Mohammed Amin Adam, Coordinator of Civil Society Platform on Oil and Gas, has appealed to government to pay attention to the MDPI/Goodwill Oil and Gas Training programmes to meet the local content requirement.
He explained that MDPI had tailored its training to equip beneficiaries towards job placement not only in Ghana but on the global oil and gas market.
“Government should adequately resource MDPI to embark on such an aggressive training for Ghanaians,” he added.
Mr Adam made the appeal in an interview with Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Accra on Monday.
He said “The MDPI oil and gas training is good but they must endeavour to liaise with the oil companies to exchange ideas.”
Mr Adam, Former Tamale Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) during the NPP administration, said essence of the training was to equip beneficiaries with the requisite knowledge and skills to seek jobs with the oil and gas companies.
“This should be done with the main objective of preparing the people to work globally but not only in Ghana.”
Mr Adam said the demand and supply component of oil and gas should be reviewed so that if supply exceeded the local demand, the people would focus on the global market and expressed worry that government was not paying much attention to the training.
“I have reliable information that government is not committing enough resources for the MDPI to embark on aggressive training to equip Ghanaians with the relevant skills for the oil and gas industry,” he stressed.
“Let us develop the local content not with a vision for the people to only secure jobs but for them to also know more about what pertains in the oil and gas sector to be able to safeguard the industry,” he added.
Mr Adam said Nigeria loses about 4.6 Billion Pounds Sterling annually because her people were leaving for other oil producing countries for jobs because of the training they had and advised government to ensure that the people were trained and employed to reduce unemployment.
He noted that Ghana was becoming the service hub in the sub-region and stressed the need for her roads, rail network and marine system to remain serviceable to attract more investments.
Mr Phillip Assibit Akpeena, Managing Consultant of MDPI, said some sponsors of the beneficiaries were not honouring their part of the bargain, therefore making it difficult for effective administration.
He said MDPI had qualified personnel who would impart knowledge to beneficiaries and gave the assurance that MDPI would continue to help promote increased productivity in public and private organisations to enable them contribute to economic growth on sustainable basis.
