The current load shedding exercise is expected to be aggravated in a couple of days as the country’s major thermal plants shut down, sources close to the producers have told Citi News.
The plants have been shut down because there is no gas from Nigeria to keep them running. The gas pressure through the West African Gas Pipeline at 7pm Monday was 14 Bars, way below the standard pressure needed to keep the plants in production.

However, the situation improved around 10:30am Monday when the gas pressure at Tema increased to 29 Bars, according to figures from the Ghana Grid Company.

Information reaching Citi News also indicated that Ghana owes gas suppliers in Nigeria, and the situation could lead to unstable gas supply in the coming days.

This latest development means Ghana will lose an additional 500 megawatts of power.

Ghana is currently shedding about 500 megawatts of power daily and the situation could leave Ghana clinging to less than 800 megawatts of power to drive domestic, commercial and industrial activities.

It has also emerged that the Volta River Authority owes the Ghana Gas Company for gas supplied to the various plants in Takoradi.

The Ghana Gas Company is expected to help Ghana improve power production by about 540MW when its Atuabo Gas Project is fully commissioned.
