The Ministry of Energy has been directed to accelerate its Cities and Communities Lighting programme as part of efforts to help fight crime in Ghana.

The move has become necessary following the surge in crime across the country, especially armed robbery attacks.

The Minister of Information and Presidential Spokesperson, Mustapha Abdul-Hamid told journalists on Thursday, 1 March 2018 that: “The Ministry of Energy has been directed to accelerate the pace of its cities and communities lighting programme in order to light up our cities and communities especially crime prone areas.”

He noted that government regards the peace and security of the country as the basis for development and will stop at nothing to ensure that Ghanaians are safe and go about their lawful duties in peace and tranquility.

President Akufo-Addo’s spokesperson further encouraged citizens to be vigilant and report suspicious characters in their communities to the law enforcement agencies.
