EPA organises public hearing on offshore oil transport terminal

  • epaThe Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on Monday organized a day’s public hearing to solicit public views before issuance of operating permit for the establishment of offshore oil service terminal by Lonrho Ghana Port Limited at Atuabo in the Western Region.

    The forum was in compliance with provisions of the EPA Act 490 of 1994 and Environmental Assessment Regulation (EAR) 1999, L.I 1652.

    Nana Adu-Kwaw II, Chief of Nzema Akropong, on behalf of chiefs and people of the area, appealed to the company to abide strictly by the local content law on oil and gas and employ the youth in the area.

    Nana Adu-Kwaw, cited an instance in the past where some mining companies operating in the district refused to engage indigenous people as its liaison officers and denying them employment.

    Awulae Amihere Kpanyinli III, Omanhene of Eastern Nzema Traditional Area, urged the youth in the area to take their education seriously in order to gain employment with such companies in the future.

    Mr Samuel Anku, Deputy Executive Director of the EPA, gave an overview of the project as well as the benefits and impact of the project on the people.

    The hearing was attended by chiefs, assembly members and people from Anochie, Asemdasuazo and Atuabo.
