  • A Gas Processing Plant, initially planned to be established at Domunil, will now be sited at Atuabo in the Ellembele District of the Western Region for economic reasons, Dr. George Sipa-Adjah Yankey, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana National Gas Company (GNGC), said on Thursday.

Addressing a meeting of the Western Regional House of Chiefs at Sekondi, he said further studies have confirmed that Atuabo is most suitable for the project.

Dr. Yankey said according to the studies, gas could be produced at greater volume at relatively low cost at Atuabo than at Domunli, which is in the Jomoro District.

He called on Chiefs and people of the region to cooperate with the GNGC to implement the project.

Dr. Yankey said politics had nothing to do with the change of the site for the project.

He said the main project would be sited at Atuabo but petro chemical industries would be sited at Domunli.

Mr. Paul Evans Aidoo, Western Regional Minister, advised the media against politicizing the change of site for the project.

He appealed to the media, especially radio stations not to allow people who did not have technical knowledge of the project to put forward their views that could cause confusion and disunity among the people.

They should always invite personnel from GNGC to their outlets to clarify issues bothering the public, Mr. Aidoo said.

He added, “We should not allow politics to destroy our dear country”.

Madam Samia Yaba Nkrumah, Member of Parliament for Jomoro, expressed her displeasure at the turn of events of the project, but urged the people to take the change of the site in good faith and in the interest of the country.

Awulae Attibrukusu III, President of the House, thanked Dr Yankey for meeting with the house to correct the misconceptions about the project and where it should be sited.

He said the project should be supported by all meaningful citizens wherever it was sited in the region.

Awulae Attibrukusu asked members of the House to assist to educate the people especially the youth in order to avoid any unfortunate development.

A cross-section of youth from the Jomoro District had protested against the change of site of the project from Domunli to Atuabo.
