Ghana Gas Company wins award for excellence

  • The Ghana Gas company (GGC) has been awarded a certificate of excellence in recognition of its efforts to reduce the flaring of gas.

The certificate came from the Global Gas Flaring Reduction, a World Bank assisted initiative.

According  to the group. The GGC had developed an integrated solution for the utilization of associated gas from the Jubilee Fields to produce electricity and petrochemicals, hence the honour.

It further stated that the efforts by the GGC would reduce green house gas emissions and diversify the economy to enhance standards of living.

The Chief Executive Officer of the GGC, Dr Sipa Yankey, commenting on the award, said  he was glad the project had not only won local admiration but reached  the level of International commendation.

The GGC started producing oil from the wells in the last quarter of 2011. Currently, the associated gas is being injected back into the oil wells and about 10 million standard cubic feet of gas is currently being flared.

The Ghana gas project will help to evacuate the gas, which is being re-injected for the processing, and also eliminate the amount of gas, which is being flared.

The gas processing plant is designed to ensure a proper fabrication of liquids from the lean gas. In effect, it will produce LPG and condensate for domestic consumption, and thus enhance usage of cleaner fuel.

The Ghana gas infrastructure project is being fast tracked to resolve all these environmental issues.

It will ensure the achievement of zero flaring efforts being promoted in the country. In addition, it will promote the development of the petrochemical industry in Ghana such as the production of fertilizer, ammonia, urea and methanol with its attendant increase in job creation.
