Ghana Gas in talks with WAPCo over reverse flow of gas

The country’s thermal power generation units will soon benefit from uninterrupted cheap fuel as Ghana national Gas Company (Ghana Gas) is about concluding an  greement with gas transporter, West africa Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCo), for a reverse flow of gas from the Jubilee fields towards Tema.

The pact will see Ghana Gas transmitting excess natural gas from thermal generating units at Aboadze in the Western Region to Tema to be used by thermal plants on the Kpone Thermal Enclave.

Gas from Atuabo is currently pumped to Aboadze, which has about three thermal plants with daily consumption of 160 million standard cubic feet of gas per day, (MMscfd).

However, due to breakdowns and routine maintenance, the units do not always consume the entire volume of natural gas, measuring about 120 MMscfd to 150 MMscfd, from the Atuabo Gas Processing Plant.

“I can say that we are in talks with WAPCo to do a reverse flow of Atuabo gas through their lines,” the Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Gas, Dr George Adja-Sipa Yankey, told the GRAPHIC BUSINESS.

Officials of WAPCo also confirmed the talks with the Ghana Gas to this paper. Dr Yankey said one of the biggest challenges Ghana Gas faced was the inability of the off-taker the Volta River Authority (VRA) – to consume what was being processed daily.

He said considering the economic importance of the associated gas from the Jubilee field to the country, there was the need to find an urgent alternative to keeping it productive and profitable, instead of flaring it.

    Setbacks

Currently, VRA, the sole off-taker of the Atuabo Gas, which operates the three thermal plants at Aboadze, is only able to utilise about 50MMscf. This is greatly frustrating efforts by Ghana Gas to attain ‘packed capacity’ of more than a billion-dollar gas processing plant.

WAPCo, operators of the West Africa pipeline system, has capacity of 800MMscfd. Ghana Gas, therefore, sees the agreement as winwin to facilitate a reverse flow for the use of pipelines between Aboadze and Tema. Both the Ghana Gas natural gas pipelines from Atuabo in the Elembele District of the Western Region and that of WAPCo from Niger Delta in nigeria terminate at Aboadze. The two can, therefore, be connected for a reverse flow to serve the two companies in meeting their supply/consumption shortfalls when it becomes necessary.

WAPCo system, which was expected to initially carry a volume of 170MMscfd and at peak time, a capacity of 460MMscfd, currently transports far below this threshold.

An additional flow from the Atuabo processing plant will enable it to pack the lines for use by whichever unit will need it – GB
