The Atuabo Gas Processing Plant has resumed full commercial operation after successfully undergoing its first planned mandatory maintenance.

The plant, as of yesterday, Sunday, May 3, 2015, was producing 54 million standard cubic feet (mmscf) of gas a day for the Volta River Authority (VRA) through the Aboadze Thermal enclave.

Aside from that, officials say 370 metric cube or 205 metric tonnes of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) is being delivered a day for the Ghanaian market and 100 metric cube or 70 metric tonnes of condensates for power generation in the Tema enclave.

    Benefits

Daily Graphic’s checks from the VRA indicated that the authority had started receiving gas from the Atuabo plant without any difficulty and that three of its units were operating on Atuabo gas as of yesterday.

The officials said before the close of day today, May 4, 2015, all the five units would switch back to gas to replace light crude oil and generate more than 500 megawatts (MW) of power to ease the current power crisis.

The VRA said during the planned mandatory maintenance by Ghana Gas, one of the units could run on light crude oil, a development which reduced its output for the period.

“We took advantage of the period and worked on the conversion process and I must say that unit will be up and running now,” a source at the VRA said.

That aside, all other smaller plants in Tema which depended on condensates for power generation would come up with their capacities, it added.

    Maintenance

The planned maintenance began on April 20, 2015 and was completed last Wednesday, April 29, 2015, nine days into the announced 14-day shut-down period.

According to the Head of Corporate Communications at Ghana Gas, Mr Alfred Ogbamey, the plant resumed the processing and supply of various gas products to its downstream off-takers last Thursday, April 30, 2015, after the re-introduction of natural gas to the plant from the Jubilee Fields that same day.

“There has been the re-introduction of raw natural gas from the FPSO Kwame Nkrumah to the onshore plant and subsequent supply to downstream off-takers began the same day,” he said.

    Collaboration

Mr Ogbamey said Ghana Gas was collaborating with the VRA to manage the transition to full production within the coming days as the VRA progressively increased its off-take of processed lean gas for power production in the Aboadze Thermal Power enclave.

    Earlier

Ghana Gas had announced early last month that it would undertake its first planned mandatory maintenance of the Atuabo Gas Processing Plant since gas production began at the plant.

It said the plant would, therefore, be shut down for a period ranging between 10 and 14 days.

It said the scheduled maintenance was a requirement by its vendors for certain critical components in the Atuabo Gas Processing Plant, particularly the compression facilities which had been in continuous service for nearly 4,000 hours since installation and commissioning.

The shutdown, the company said, formed part of required safety protocols which were very essential for warranty assurance and viability of its operating insurance, given the multiple equipment manufacturers involved in the manufacturing of modules for the plant.
