Ghana guaranteed gas from N-Gas

  • SOURCE: | qwesa2big
  • AtuabogasThe country’s power sector has been guaranteed constant fuel source, as Nigeria Gas Company (N-Gas) and the transporters, the West African Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCo), Tuesday resolved to continue uninterrupted gas supply to the Volta River Authority (VRA) for its thermal enclaves in Shama and Tema.

However, the Daily Graphic can authoritatively report that a few hours after the Thursday, October 15 midnight deadline, the volume of gas from Nigeria had dropped to zero and one unit of the Asogli Plant in Tema had been shut down due to low gas pressure.

The situation, as of the end of business yesterday, was ramping up from level zero to 30 million standard cubic feet (mmscf).

    WAPCo’s response

When the Daily Graphic contacted officials of WAPCo, they confirmed the zero level and attributed the problem to a fault at one of its gas fields in Nigeria.

According to the Head of Corporate Communications at WAPCo, Mrs Joyce Wereko-Brobby, the pressure was beginning to increase from zero.

Before last Thursday, gas pressure from Nigeria through the pipeline was between 110 and 120mmscf but suddenly dropped to zero last Saturday.

Asked if it had not been due to the threat by N-Gas to cut supply to Ghana, she responded in the negative, indicating that it was merely coincidental.

    The agreement

The Head of Public Affairs at the Ministry of Power, Mr Kweku Sersah-Johnson, said the agreement for N-Gas to supply constant gas to Ghana came on the heels of a courtesy call on the President by a Nigerian delegation in Kumasi last Monday.

He said after several consultations, the ministry announced the new agreement under which N-Gas and WAPCo would continue with the supplies.

N-Gas, the largest supplier of natural gas for the country’s thermal generation, had, at the beginning of this month, issued threats to cut gas supply to Ghana due to VRA’s failure to honour its debt obligations.

    Threats

WAPCo had threatened to cut gas supply to Ghana by midnight on October 16, 2015 if the VRA failed to settle its indebtedness to the company.

At a press conference in Accra, the Managing Director of WAPCo, Mr Walter Perez, had said the decision followed a formal order from N-Gas to WAPCo, the company that transports gas to the VRA.

If the threat had been carried out, it would have worsened the power crisis facing the country.

To forestall the possibility of plunging the country into total darkness, a high-powered government delegation, led by the Power Minister, Dr Kwabena Donkor, and including the Chief Executive of the VRA, Mr Kirk Cofie, and other officials travelled to Nigeria to confer with the management of WAPCo on a payment plan for the debt.

    Our needs

Currently, Ghana’s daily gas needs are estimated at about 450mmscf and the output by Ghana Gas currently is estimated at a little over 100mmscf, which is not enough to fuel the generating units in the Aboadze and Tema thermal enclaves.

The country currently has associated gas reserves of more than five trillion standard cubic feet (TCF).

Work is currently going on at the ENI-Sankofa Project, while additional volumes are expected to be added to the reserves.

    N-Gas

N-Gas is owned by the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Chevron and Shell.
