Ghana National Gas Company (GNGC) disclose it readiness to tackle Atuabo gas safety

The Ghana National Gas Company (GNGC) says it is fully prepared to deal with any challenges that may rear their heads following the tie-in between the gas processing plant at Atuabo and the FPSO Kwame Nkrumah.

“No one is more mindful of the importance of safety and security of this infrastructure than the board and management of Ghana Gas,” a statement signed by the Board Chairman of Ghana Gas, Dr Kwesi Botchwey, and issued by the company in Accra yesterday said.

The Wood Group, an independent audit firm, and the Energy Commission had warned that it was risky to flow gas at that period, since there were still some works to be completed.

But the GNGC last Monday brushed aside warnings by the two institutions to flow natural gas from the Jubilee Field to the Atuabo plant.

    Attempts to derail project

The GNGC said it was aware of moves by some persons and institutions to derail the commencement of operations at the Atuabo plant.

It called for a stop to the “peddling of untruths” that could undermine the great efforts put in place to bring the project into fruition.

The facility, it said, was constructed by globally acclaimed experts, while GNGC staff were also well-trained and positioned to manage it.

    Benefits to Ghana

“The gas project will position the nation to garner significant savings over its crude oil and gas imports for power generation,” the statement said.

It indicated that the beginning of full operations at the Atuabo plant would mark a significant breakthrough for the county in its energy needs.

    Commissioning

The statement added that the commissioning of the project was progressing steadily following the flow of gas.

“As the commissioning progresses steadily, incremental quantities of raw gas will be necessarily injected into the processing facilities that will culminate in the best production of specification quality lean gas and other natural gas liquids in volumes that will be usable,” it said.

It added that the GNGC would update Ghanaians on the integrated commissioning phase “up until when we are finally ready to provide regular supplies of lean gas to the VRA Aboadze complex”.

The statement said the integrated commissioning would be carried out in phases over a period of weeks, adding that within those periods all the operating and monitoring systems would undergo full testing and thorough accepted paces.

The integrated commissioning starts from the offshore connecting valve at the FPSO Kwame Nkrumah through the Atuabo plant to the Esiama Gas distribution station and to the connecting valve at the VRA Aboadze Complex.

    Permit

“With the requisite clearances, Ghana Gas will then obtain a preliminary permit from the regulatory agencies to allow the transfer of such produced gas and liquids to the VRA and other customers rather than flare it,” it said.
