Ghana taps Trinidad for natural gas joint venture

  • PORT OF SPAIN (Reuters) – Trinidad and Tobago’s state-run natural gas company is teaming up with Ghana’s state-owned oil company in a joint venture to transport, process and distribute natural gas in the West African country.

On Wednesday, Trinidad and Tobago’s Energy Minister Carolyn Seepersad-Bachan said the National Gas Company (NGC) was selected by the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation in a competitive bid for a project to supply energy to power plants in Ghana.

Ghana joined the club of oil-producing nations in December, with initial output from its Jubilee offshore oil field of 120,000 barrels per day (bpd).

Ghanaian officials say there is an estimated 800 billion cubic feet of associated gas from the Jubilee field that can be gathered, processed and delivered to meet strong demand in Ghana for natural gas liquids and natural gas for electricity generation.

Seepersad-Bachan said the Ghana project is an opportunity for NGC to expand its operations outside Trinidad and Tobago.

"NGC is breaking new ground as it is the first state company to be extending its services and expertise beyond our shores," she said.

Trinidad and Tobago is the Caribbean’s leading oil and natural gas producer.
