Give us prepaid meters — Ashanti Region residents

  • SOURCE: | qwesa2big
  • ECG LOGOSome residents in the Ashanti Region have protested vehemently against the use of the post-paid electricity meters and called on the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to install prepaid meters in their houses.

They argued that the ECG officials did not read the post-paid meters but gave them estimated bills which were way more than what they consumed monthly.

Additionally, they said, some of the amounts they paid did not reflect in their subsequent bills.

The residents, mainly within Suame and its surrounding communities, made the call during a Customer Complaint Day organised by the ECG in Kumasi.

The day was to enable customers with issues and enquiries regarding the usage of electricity to meet with the staff and management of ECG for prompt attention and resolution.

Surprisingly, in areas such as Asokwa and Asafo where customers were using prepaid meters, very few customers were at the offices of the ECG, unlike those from Kwabre and Suame where the usage of post-paid meters was predominant.

The customers who came in angrily complained about the billing and payment issues.

    Complaints

An 80-year-old woman, Maame Yaa Pomaa, who lives in a three-bedroom house, complained that the ECG did not present her a bill for a long time, only for the company to bill her more than GH¢8,000 covering seven months.

What was more worrying, she said,  was that her bill for February alone was GH¢1,100.

Another customer,  Samuel Adjei, stated that he did not receive any bill from January last year till June, and when he followed up at the ECG office, he was given an estimated bill of GH¢3,000, which he paid.

“Even that amount was not deducted from the subsequent bills,” he stated.

    Turnout

The ECG Public Relations Officer for the region, Mr Erasmus Baidoo, said the turnout at the event was very encouraging because the company was able to categorise the complaints and deal with them appropriately.

He assured the customers that the ECG would soon give out prepaid meters in all the areas.
