  • gnpc 2The Mines and Energy Committee in Parliament has rejected a proposal by the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) for the establishment of a University for Petroleum under an oil agreement with AGM Petroleum Ghana Limited.

Parliament last week approved the petroleum agreement between the GNPC and AGM Petroleum to allow the latter explore the South Deepwater Tano Block offshore Ghana.

As part of the terms of the contract, about $15 million has been earmarked for capacity building of which the GNPC is proposing that the money be used to set up a university.

But in an interview on Eyewitness News on Tuesday, a ranking member of the Mines and Energy Committee in Parliament, Hon. K.T. Hammond opined that the GNPC “does not need a university.”

According to him, the committee has revised the GNPC’s proposal and has directed that the “money should be used to build an effective capacity and how that form takes is to be decided later.”

He complained about the tendencies of the GNPC venturing into projects “that were not entirely in the area of responsibility” which according to him gets “them into so many difficulties.”

Mr. Hammond mentioned that there are universities and other institutions offering courses in oil and gas and therefore does not “see why GNPC should have a university of its own.”

However, a Senior Media Relations Officer at the GNPC, Ato Kobby indicated that his outfit has already set up “a foundation which has a long term objective of establishing a petroleum institute and if it’s the case that the institute must wait…then that is also an option.”
