  • The Ghana National Petroleum Company (GNPC) has injected GH¢450,000 into Ghana’s preparation and hosting of the second ECOWAS Games billed for next month. Thomas Manu Director for Exploration and Operations at the GNPC says the donation forms part of the company’s social responsibilities which hinges on health, education and sports.

He said the response to the call from the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) of the Games was one aimed at partnering the Committee to stage a fabulous event and uplift the image of Ghana during the week-long event. We see the country’s hosting of the Games as a positive step to sports development in the country and on the sub-region as well, hence our decision to support the preparation and the competition.

Dr, Edward Omane- Boamah, Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports and Chairman of the LOC said in anticipating a successful Games, his outfit found GNPC’s response as very timely with less than a month to the competition, which is expected to bring all 15 member states together. This is a very good response to our appeal and we are very grateful. We trust that the returns of the investment in the competition and sports as a whole will be huge as always.’

He said “the GNPC has made the right investment and I assure you that every pesewa would be accounted for right after the competition. We will make a clear statement of account immediately after the Games so all would know how their monies were used.”

The Accra Sports and El-Wak Stadia are expected to host Athletics, Armature Boxing, Traditional Wrestling, Volley Ball and Handball from June 16-24.
