  • Information reaching DAILY GUIDE has it that an oil platform, also referred to as an oil rig, used in extracting and processing oil and natural gas, located on the sea near the Sekondi  Naval  Base on the Nkotompo-Sekondi  road  is currently being balkanized for scraps by some unknown persons.

DAILY GUIDE gathered that the oil rig which was used to store oil and gas products until they were brought ashore for refining and marketing , was installed by the Ghana National Petroleum  Corporation (GNPC) about ten years ago, when Tsatsu Tsikata was the Chief Executive Officer ,

The paper learnt that because the rig was located on the sea, when the metals were cut from the oil, they were ferried by a buoy barge to the Sekondi Naval Base before they were conveyed in a truck to an unknown destination.

Some fishermen at Sekondi- European Town near the Naval Base, in an interview with DAILY GUIDE, confirmed that for some time now, they have been seeing some people cutting the oil rigs for scraps.

They could not have fathom why people should be allowed to be destroy a national property, while the naval officers allegedly, did nothing about it.

They told Daily Guide that the rig was being destroyed probably because the once brand-new oil platform had out lived its usefulness.

“Sometimes too when we went fishing and got nearer to it ,we could detect that a section of it was leaking, causing it to sink at times and that is why I think it’s being destroyed”, one of the fishermen remarked.

Some of the fisher folks who supported the alleged decision by the navy to destroy the rig, argued that the facility was of no use and that it was better the facility was cut for scraps to get money put of it than to allow it to rust adding “the scrap business has now become lucrative”.

When DAILY GUIDE contacted the naval officers as to why the rig was being cut for scraps ,the paper was informed that the said rig has been sold to a private person who was cutting it for scraps and that there was nothing  unlawful about it.
