Ghana Oil Company has announced a 12-month sponsorship deal for Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko.
The oil marketing company will pay each club GHS 480000 over the period, consisting of GHS40000 monthly payments.
“GOIL has been concerned about the dwindling fortunes of football clubs and by extension the local league, which is said to be the passion of the nation. Many instances of the flagging fortunes abound. Poor financial position of clubs, irregular payment of salaries to players resulting in low morale and lack of motivation among players are but a few,” the company said in a statement.
“GOIL is convinced throwing a lifeline directly to the two leading clubs will help generally in strengthening the clubs, boosting the morale of players, and livening up the league. As a growing indigenous oil company, we believe in local content development and promotion of excellence in all facets of local lives. Our interest is to support the local league, which we believe will eventually benefit talent development and strengthen the cash-strapped clubs.”
Speaking at a ceremony to announce the sponsorship in Accra Friday April 29, Managing Director of GOIL Patrick Akorli said the decision to sponsor the country’s two biggest clubs is part of their policy to help the local game.
Both Hearts of Oak and Kotoko will display the GOIL logo at the back of their clubs’ official jerseys as well as GOIL’s logo and products at their pitch panels at their training sessions.
