Government must prioritise its Expenditure- Samuel Bekoe

SAM BEKS

An economic analyst at Ghana oil and gas for inclusive growth (GOGIG), Samuel Bekoe has advised Government to carefully prioritise its expenditure.

He said prioritising expenditure was very important for government to plan and subsequently implement them, as it cannot carry out all its projects in a year.

Speaking at the National Dialogue on Sustainable funding of ‘’Free SHS’’ policy in Accra, he explained that with the current tight fiscal space in the economy, it was important for government to plan its expenditure and carry them out over time.

Mr Bekoe also outlined some significant measures to help manage the country’s economic deficit.

He said in his presentation, expensive recurrent expenditure, electoral cycle spending, unplanned spending, Contingent liabilities drive most of our deficits, persistent borrowing and budget arrears are things driving the country’s deficit.

On how to reduce that, he reiterated the need for a consensus between politics, managerial and bureaucrats to ensure effective managed our revenue. He said there is also the need for government to carefully enact a strategy spending rule for all sectors in the country.

The National Dialogue among other objectives seeks to advocate for additional information on an implementation and costing strategy which states the government’s plan for rolling out the Free SHS policy and manage public expectations.

The event saw the participation of Civil Society groups, stakeholders, policy advocates, public institutions and media personals.
