  • 1.9563789The Public Interest and Accountability Committee (PIAC) has confirmed that the government has refunded GHS3.6 million it withdrew from the Petroleum Fund to finance the re-branding of 116 state buses.

Confirming the refund, committee Chair Professor Paul Kingsley Buah-Bassuah told journlaists: “What was used for the re-branding of the metro rapid transport buses has been refunded in full. The petroleum component has been refunded; that is, the GHS3.65 million has been paid to the country according to our report.”

The Minister of Transport, who supervised the re-branding at the time, Dzifa Attivor, resigned after it was revealed that the amount for the re-branding was overpriced.

The local firm that spearheaded the exercise, Smarrtys Production and Management, was asked by the Chief of Staff to refund the excess amount of GHS1.5million based on the recommendations of the Attorney General after a probe was conducted into the affair.

PIAC was set up to oversee and ensure prudent use of petroleum revenue in the country.
