As Ghana, Ivory Coast set up
    joint c’ttee to implement ruling

CITIZENS of both Ghana and Ivory Coast will soon begin to reap the benefits of agreements and strategic roadmap reached for the implementation of the recent judgement on the delimitation of the maritime boundary between the two countries, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has stated.

The two governments yesterday signed three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and one strategic agreement on various sectors of co-operation, as well as the way forward for the implementation of the ruling.

Ghana and Ivory Coast established a joint committee to oversee the implementation of the recent judgement by the International Tribunal of the Law of the Sea (ITLOS), over the two countries’ maritime border dispute.
The agreements were reached as part of events marking the two-day visit by the Ivorian leader to Ghana.

The Special Chamber of the International Tribunal of the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) ruled in favour of Ghana in the three-year-long maritime dispute.
The chamber, in a unanimous decision on Saturday, September 23, 2017, ruled that there had not been any violation on the part of Ghana on Côte d’Ivoire’s maritime boundary.

Speaking after the signing ceremony at the Flagstaff House yesterday, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo said, among other things, that the dedication exhibited by both the Ivorian and Ghanaian teams in producing the working documents attest to the commitment both countries have invested into making the ruling beneficial to both countries.

“These two days have proved fruitful and I believe that the various agreements that have been worked out begin to play out in the public space. The Ghanaian and Ivorian people will see the necessity of this vision and its value to them,” the President noted.

He reiterated the importance of the two countries to harness synergy for mutual benefits, as well as setting the tone for greater integration among the rest of the West African region and the continent as a whole.

“It is obvious the reasons why Ivorian and Ghanaian leadership should always be in harmony and work together…it is the best guarantee that the various strengths that we have individually can be put together for the benefit of our two populations”, he said.

He also reposed confidence in his Ivorian counterpart in exercising the political will to see to the realisation of visions set for the two countries.
“I am very confident that in President Ouattara, I have a partner who is determined to translate the words we find on paper to concrete actions to the benefit of our people,” he added.
The Ivorian President, on his part, expressed gratitude to the Government and People of Ghana for the immense support and solidarity demonstrated to his country during the Ivorian crisis, and fondly recalled the crucial role played by His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who was then the Foreign Minister of Ghana, in taking a principled and objective stance that ensured the peaceful resolution of the crisis.

President Ouattara also thanked President Akufo-Addo for his personal efforts in ensuring the return of Cote d’Ivoire to the path of democracy.

The two leaders also reviewed Ghana-Cote d’Ivoire bilateral relations, and agreed to continue to build on the existing special bonds of kinship and co-operation for the mutual benefit of their peoples.

Furthermore, both Presidents indicated their commitment to ensure the continuous deepening of brotherly ties beyond the existing framework for bilateral co-operation, such as the Permanent Joint Commission for Co-operation, and agreed to boost the momentum of Ghanaian-Ivorian Co-operation by establishing a strategic co-operation framework referred to as the Strategic Partnership Agreement (SPA), which covers the following areas such as Defence and Security; Cocoa and Cashew and other strategic crops; Maritime Cooperation; Mining, Energy and Environment; Transport; and Economic Policies.

President Akufo-Addo bestowed the honour of ‘The Companion of the Star of Ghana, Honorary Division’, Ghana’s highest civilian national honour, on President Ouattara for his untiring efforts at ensuring social justice, peace and security at the domestic, as well as the international, level for his leadership qualities.
