  • A lecturer at the University of Ghana is advocating for a concerted effort in grooming the academic potentials of the youth in the country.

Dr. Mawuli Adjei noted that equal attention, if not more, must be directing at harnessing the intellectual capacity of the youth, as against the many beauty pageants mushrooming in the country.

He was speaking during the official launch of the Jubilee First Oil National Essay Competition by Jubilee partners- Kosmos Energy, Anadarko, EO Group, Ghana National Petroleum Corporation, Tullow Oil and SABRE.

The competition is to create awareness for the youth on oil exploration in the country and is part of a series of activities heralding the drilling of oil in commercial quantities next month.

The competition is in two categories; a junior category opened to students of the Junior and Senior High Schools and a senior category opened to students of tertiary institutions.

The Junior category has as its topic To what use should Ghana put its oil wealth whilst the topic for the senior category is Ghana’s oil is for development; outline some developmental benefits of Ghana’s oil find.

Speaking on behalf of the Deputy Education Minister, the Director of Pre-tertiary education, at the Ministry of Education, Mrs. Mary Quaye was delighted at the unique opportunity for the voice of the youth to be heard on Ghana’s oil revenue management.

She noted that “After all, 20 years from now, it is the youth that will benefit or suffer from this oil find; 20 years from now it is the youth of today that will either say our past leaders failed us or our past leaders provided adequately for us.”

She said the competition marks the changing environment in the attitude of corporate Ghana towards the youth and urged the teeming youth to take advantage of the prolific opportunity to make an input in the oil debate in the country.

Mrs. Quaye however advised organizers of the competition to separate students of the junior secondary schools from those of the senior secondary schools.

That, she said, will provide a fair assessment of all the competitors.
