KOSMOS Energy Ghana has completed a three-day intensive hands-on training on how to investigate incidents using Root Cause Analysis in the health, safety and environment sub-sector.
The training for health, safety and environment (HSE) officers of selected public and private sector institutions is critical in HSE circles as it helps with the proper management of incidents by accurately determining their root causes. It also comes with the philosophy to institute preventive systems to forestall challenges, problems and incidents.
In all, 25 officers drawn from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Petroleum Commission, the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) and the Ghana National Gas Company Ltd participated in the training which was facilitated by LEORON International Professional Development Institute, a leading corporate training company dedicated to emerging markets of Europe, Africa and Asia.
Other companies that participated included two private companies, Quantum Gas and Zeal Environmental Technologies Ltd as well as the Volta River Authority (VRA) and the Ministry of Petroleum and Energy.
Kosmos Energy, which first discovered oil in the country’s offshore waters, said the training was consistent with its long-term strategy of investing in the country.
“Safety is paramount in everything we do so this is an element of ensuring that all of our operations are conducted in the safest manner possible. But equally we believe that we have an obligation and a commitment to invest in the people of Ghana, both in our company and outside of it,” the Vice-President and Country Manager of Kosmos, Mr Ken Keag, told the Daily Graphic last Friday.
He said the company included officers from other government agencies and private sector companies because it wanted to provide the same opportunities to a broad spectrum of its stakeholders in the oil and gas sector.
Mr Keag said the training would not be one-off, but Kosmos considered it a responsibility to organise it as regularly as possible, using available trainers in different sectors of the oil and gas industry to make those opportunities available to a wider segment of the industry.
The HSE and Security Director of Kosmos, Dr Kwame Boakye-Agyei, explained that based on its philosophy to help build capacity in the oil and gas industry, the company had also organised similar training sessions such as the oil spill response, levels one and three, as well as other required safety training.
