The technology is more environmentally friendly, consumes less fuel and ensures the safety of the
    fishmongers and is energy- efficient.

About 150 beneficiaries from Ankobra and Ekpu in the Ellembele and the Jomoro districts respectively, have been taken through capacity-building and business education under Kosmos’ Livelihood Enhancement Initiative
for Ankobra Fish Processors Association (AFPA).

The focus of the project and training was to ensure that the business continues during the lean fishing season and prevent post¬harvest losses during the bumper season.

After the training, a fishmongers’ association was formed by the women will use the facility, which according to them, marks the first step in the development business in the districts.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, the Vice-president and Country Manager of
Kosmos Energy Ghana, Ken Keag, said: “Women in any society are central to its development. The valuable service provided by women in this line of business cannot be ignored’.

He said Kosmos’ support for the new fish-smoking technology was an indication of the company’s appreciation and respect for the diverse people in their areas of operation.

Prior to the handover, Mr Keag had met the beneficiaries to discuss the proper use of the facility.

“This facility is yet another example of Kosmos Energy working together with communities to create value and build the best foundation for sustainable businesses,” he said.

The Director of Corporate Affairs of Kosmos, Mr George Sarpong, said in line with the company’s core principles of creating value for their stakeholders, Kosmos Energy continued to form strong and collaborative relationships with its host communities to jointly create value through sustainable projects; projects that provide economic opportunities for the development of host communities.

Many of the women commended the company for the facility and said, “previously, our smoking areas were not the best and aside the facility, the company had also provided for us training that will enable us to develop our business well.”

The facility has heat-proof roofing and provides a perfect environment that takes care of the fish from the time it arrives from the shore for processing until the women start smoking them for the market. It also makes the fish more attractive.
