The Ghana Mineworkers Union (GMWU) has threatened to withdraw its services to all mining companies in the country if Newmont Ghana fails to redraw armed police and military men at its Akyem and Ahafo mines.

Citi Business News has learnt Newmont Ghana on Wednesday, 14th April, 2015 reinforced its security at its Ahafo mines with a number of police and military men.

The mining company is reported to have brought in the security men to protect life and property following threats by the mine workers union to strike over better conditions of service.

The of the workers are reported to have been detained by the security personnel over the development. Speaking to Citi Business News General Secretary of the Ghana Mineworkers Union Prince Williams Ankrah said Newmont must desist from using force and intimidation to get workers to agree to their demands.

“The employs are at work except that Management of Newmont has sent a strong military and police presence to the mines and as we speak one employee we hear has been molested while two of them had been held by the joint military and police. We want to say that this is an issue that could spark a major industrial action. Therefore we are asking management to redraw the military and the police unconditionally otherwise Newmont stands to see a major strike on hand because the employees are working, they have not done anything untoward and I don’t think it is fair for any security personnel to molest them
