  • 1.8814657Mining recommenced today Tuesday April 12 at the Toguraci mine, part of the Gosowong operation in Indonesia.

Since the geotechnical event at Kencana on 8 February 2016, mining at Gosowong has been suspended.

During the period of suspension, technical studies and rehabilitation work have been undertaken at both Toguraci and Kencana and some low grade stockpiled material has been processed, Newcrest Mining Limited has said.

The rate of mining at Toguraci will slowly increase over time, with full production from Toguraci not expected for at least 2 months.

Newcrest said mining at Kencana remains suspended. The miner said technical studies in relation to Kencana are well advanced, but yet to be completed.

Production and cost guidance for Gosowong for the 2016 financial year will be updated after recovery and resumption plans have been completed, Newcrest announced.

Meanwhile, Newcrest Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer, Sandeep Biswas, on Tuesday announced the appointment of Ian Kemish as EGM – Public Affairs & Social Performance, effective 16 May 2016.

He will be a member of Newcrest’s Executive Committee. Mr Biswas said: “the appointment is in line with the importance that Newcrest places on developing and maintaining meaningful relationships with our key stakeholders which underpin our long term success. Ian’s expertise in international and government affairs is critical to our presence and success, particularly within Papua New Guinea and Indonesia.”

The role will provide strategic leadership and hold group accountability for Government Relations, Social Performance, and Media, recognising the close inter-relationship between these areas.

Mr Kemish has extensive executive level experience across industry and government having held roles spanning the resources sector, political and business advocacy, economic analysis, management of the Australian international aid program, and crisis management.

Mr Kemish joins Newcrest from ExxonMobil where, for the past three years, has held the role of Senior Director, Asia Pacific External Affairs.

Prior to this, Ian has held the roles of Australian High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea; Australian Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany and Switzerland; Head of the International Division at the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, and Head of the South East Asia and Consular Divisions at DFAT.

He holds a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in International Relations and South East Asian Modern History, and a Graduate Diploma in Education. He was awarded membership of the Order of Australia in 2003 for his leadership of the Australian Government’s emergency response to the 2002 Bali bombings. “I look forward to having a person of Ian’s calibre join Newcrest to assist us to realise the full potential of our assets and opportunities,” said Mr Biswas
