aboadzeThe newly appointed board members of the Ghana National Gas Company (Ghana Gas) were yesterday (Thursday) sworn into office at the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum.

The five-member board, chaired by Mr John Armstrong Yao Klinogo, a chartered accountant, also includes Mr Alexander Mensah Mould, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC); Dr George Sipa-Adjah Yankey, the CEO of Ghana Gas Awulae Amihere Kpanyinli, the Paramount Chief of the East

Nzema Traditional Area, and Ms Vivenne Gadzekpo, the Director of Legal Affairs at the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum.
    Challenges

Speaking at the ceremony, the Minister of Energy and Petroleum, Mr Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, tasked the members to work with the management to effectively deal with the challenges facing the company.

“One of the biggest challenges facing the company is debt. This is because the Volta River Authority does not pay for the gas it buys from the company as it ought to do,” he stated.

According to him, the government was using every tool at its disposal to tackle the situation, adding that Ghana Gas, being a key stakeholder, had a significant role to play.

Ghana Gas, he said, was crucial in the country’s quest to improve its power generation capacity to address the deficit in the power sector.

    Community support

Mr Buah urged members of the board to be sensitive to the needs of the communities in which the company operated, adding that “the company must initiate effective corporate social responsibility strategies to support the developmental needs of the communities within its areas of operation”.

For his part, Mr Klinogo said members would employ their expertise, which span all sectors, to help improve the fortunes of the company.
