News Review for 23rd October 2017: “Oil-funded projects in Northern Region ‘missing’

  • The Extractive Sector counts down to the end of the year. In anticipation for the Annual Revenue Report, the Accra-based news portal Citifmonline reported “Oil-funded projects in Northern Region ‘missing’ – ACEP”. According to the Energy Policy Think Tank, the African Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP), has revealed that some specific projects in the Northern Region which were supposed to have been funded from Ghana’s oil revenue do not actually exist.  According to the think-tank’s Senior Programmes Manager, Miss Munira Abubakari, despite being listed as projects which were being financed from the limited proceeds from the oil find, checks had revealed that none of the said projects were operational.

    The news portal also reported ‘NDC praises Mahama, Atta Mills for ITLOS victory’.  The National Democratic Congress (NDC), views the  International Tribunal of the Law of the Sea’s judgment in favor of Ghana in the maritime dispute with Côte d’Ivoire, as the fruits of the foresight and strong leadership of former President John Mahama, and late President John Evans Atta Mills. In a statement, the NDC acknowledged “President Mahama’s courage in launching the ITLOS case despite concerns that this could be misinterpreted by our neighbors as a hostile act and that Ghana could lose the case at ITLOS.”

    The state-owned newspaper online, graphiconline also reported “PRAAD was behind Ghana’s ITLOS victory – COCA”.  After Ghana won the maritime dispute case against Cote D’Ivoire at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS), many have showered praises on the legal faces behind the case. But according to the Coalition of Concerned Archivists (COCA), the Public Records and the Archives Administration Department (PRAAD), deserves greater commendation for providing the necessary archival materials that the enabled the lawyers to present a strong case against Cote D’Ivoire.

    Furthermore, it also disclosed “NPA Closes Down 36 LPG Stations”. This it explained, Thirty-six gas filling stations have been closed down by the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) for not meeting industry requirements.The infractions include non-payment of statutory and distributors’ margins as well as non-compliance with safety protocols.Ghana has recorded eight gas explosions in the past three years, resulting in many deaths and the injury of more than 150 people. The recent explosion occured at the Atomic Junction at Madina near Accra on Saturday, October 7, 2017 and injured 132 others.

    Meanwhile, Myjoyoyonline has also disclosed that “Explosion proof’ cylinders to complement new LPG distribution module”.  The Ghana Cylinder Manufacturing Company has been licensed by the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) to retail Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) as they prepare to produce what they describe as ‘explosion proof’ cylinders to support the Cylinder Recirculation Module. The Cylinder Recirculation Module was introduced by the government as part of measures to forestall gas explosions in the country.
