News Review on Wednesday November 1st: Cancel Ameri deal, hold Agyarko accountable – Donkor

    The Ameri Power debate is still ongoing today. In both online and traditional media, reporters disclosed stories which made headlines.

    The Accra-based online portal Classfmonline reported “Cancel Ameri deal, hold Agyarko accountable – Donkor”.  This they explained Former Power Minister Dr Kwabena Donkor has said Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko should be held responsible if an abrogation of the AMERI power deal causes Ghana to be slapped with hefty cost within the courts of international arbitration. Dr Donkor’s comment follows hints by Mr Agyarko that the Akufo-Addo government could abrogate the $510million Africa and Middle East Resources Investment deal because enough due diligence was not done by the Mahama administration prior to signing the deal.

    On the same issues, the state wireless media portal Ghananewsagency also reported “Government examines options on AMERI deal”. According to the news portal Mr Boakye Agyarko, Minister of Energy, has said government is looking at all options available to them with regards to the AMERI deal.

    He said government is also examining all the decisions in terms of the financial implications to the country. Mr Agyarko made the revelation when he appeared before Parliament’s Committee on Mines and Energy over the AMERI Energy deal.  The Minister was also at the Committee to respond to questions over the $510 million emergency power deal signed to shore up the country’s energy supply.

    The Finderonline also disclosed “Boakye Agyarko backs review of Ameri power deal”. Energy Minister, Boakye Agyarko wants Parliament to review the terms of the controversial AMERI power deal. Testifying before the Mines and Energy Committee of Parliament, Boakye Agyarko said immediately after the ratification of the deal by Parliament in August 2015, some already agreed terms were changed, which should have gone back to Parliament.

    Graphic online also reported “Govt considering abrogation of AMERI power deal”.
