Oil communities attend stakeholders workshop

  • The Western Region Development Network of NGOs (WERENGO) is coming out with an abridged manual of the Environmental Impact Assessment Statement (EIAS) guarding operations of oil partners at the Jubilee Field at the Cape Three Points.

The abridged EIAS manual would be made available to the six communities close to the Jubilee Field to empower them to participate and monitor its implementation to their satisfaction.

The communities are Shama, Jomoro, Ellembelle, Nzema East, Ahanta West and Sekondi-Takoradi.

Mr Kwame Mensah, Coordinator of the WERENGO made this known at a stakeholders’ workshop on the impact of oil on the socio-economic lives of people living around the Jubilee Field.

The workshop was organised in collaboration with the Strengthening Transparency Accountable and Responsive Ghana, a multi- donor pooled organisation for stakeholders such as fishers, personnel of the Environmental Protection Agency, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies, youth groups and civil society groups.

Mr Mensah described the current EIAS document as voluminous with more than 700 pages that makes reading difficult to understand.
