  • An old oil storage vessel has run aground at the Bongo Beach near the Takoradi Thermal Plant.

It run aground after its anchor chain broke last Friday.

But luckily, the vessel did not ram into the breakwater of thee Ghana navy or into the GNPC rig which was anchored few metres away from it.

The Takoradi representative of Sentuo Sea Ltd, the company which bought the vessel for scrap, Mr Matthew Martin Anderson, told the Daily Graphic, that the two crew members who were on board the vessel at the time of the incident were safe.

He said the early morning strong winds and the high current caused the anchor chain to break and subsequently pushed the vessel making it to ran aground.

When he was asked about the quantity of oil in it, which could cause pollution, Mr Anderson said officials managed to siphon much of the oil in the old tanker.

He said Sentuo Sea would formally write to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the National Security and the Ghana Navy for advice.

“We bought the vessel for a million dollars to be used as a scrap to feed Sentuo sea ltd, formally Wahome steel in Tema but would have to wait for advice from the stakeholders,” he said.

When the Daily Graphic got to the scene last Saturday, the vessel was at an estuary between Essipon and the Takoradi thermal plant at Aboadze.

The old storage vessel, African wave, was leased to the Saltpond oil fields but became very expensive to run and dangerous to its operations.
