Latest figures show that the 7.8-magnitude quake, which struck the OPEC Member Country’s Pacific Coast area at around 7pm on Saturday evening, has killed at least 413 people. Officials said Monday that a further 2,500 were injured.
OPEC Secretary General Abdalla Salem El-Badri said the thoughts and prayers of the Secretariat and Organization went out to the country and the many families and friends affected by the catastrophe.
“Ecuador is a much valued Member of OPEC and I would like to express the Organization’s solidarity with the country at this most difficult time,” he said.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake was the worst to hit the South American country since March 1987, when a 7.2-magnitude quake killed 1,000 people.
