  • OPECOPEC Secretary General HE Mohammad Sanusi Barkindo received his first official visit on 5 August, 2016 at the organisation’s Secretariat in Vienna, Austria.

HE Wilson Pástor Morris, Ambassador of Ecuador to Austria and the country’s OPEC Governor, was the guest of honour.

During the meeting, Pástor Morris conveyed a personal message of goodwill and best wishes from the President of Ecuador, HE Rafael Correa Delgado, to the Secretary General for a successful tenure. HE Barkindo took up his appointment as head of the Secretariat on 1 August, 2016.

President Correa expressed confidence in the professional competence and rich experience of HE Barkindo, which has spanned over three decades in steering OPEC to further heights.

“Your nomination is a merit to your leadership and professional experience, qualities that will ensure your success in the management of such an important organisation,” he said in the letter.

In stressing Ecuador’s continued support for OPEC, the President extended an invitation to HE Barkindo to visit Ecuador as his guest.

Mr Pástor Morris also congratulated HE Barkindo on being selected as the new Secretary General and wished him well in his new role.

For his part, HE Barkindo said the first visit was significant and important and expressed his intention to work hand-in-hand with Ecuador and other OPEC Member Countries to pave the best way forward for the organisation.

Additional themes discussed during the meeting included current issues related to the international oil market outlook, as well as initial planning for the upcoming 15th International Energy Forum (IEF) Ministerial Meeting, which will be hosted by fellow OPEC Member Country Algeria from 26-28 September 2016.
