MINING, OIL AND GAS WORKSHOP OPENS IN ACCRA

  • IMG_08102013_091629As part of the drive to promote greater transparency over oil and gas resources and revenue of Ghana  through empowering the media to play its effective watchdog role, Penplusbytes in partnership with Revenue Watch Institute is holding its next training course for 9 Ghanaian Journalists under the project “Empowering the Media to Play Active Watchdog Role over Oil and Gas Revenue and Resources”at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), Accra, Ghana. This workshop is a follow up to initial workshop held in Tanzania earlier this year.

    The 7 day workshop which will begin on 25th of November to Monday, 2nd December 2013 is aimed at promoting good governance and an effective oversight of the oil, gas (extractive) resources and revenues by the Ghanaian media namely Independent Newspaper, Daily Graphic, Ghana News Agency, Public Agenda, Ghanaian Chronicle, Gurune Style FMand Myjoyonline.com.

    The 7 day workshop is designed to introduce practicing journalists to current key issues surrounding Oil, Gas and Mining thereby helping them to develop the knowledge and skills to stimulate and feed public debate on how best to ensure that proceeds from the sector are used in the interests the country and its citizens. The workshop also includes a 2 day field trip which will provide the selected journalists with first-hand information and a better understanding of the extractive sector to enable them better inform and educate civil society and the general public.

    Kwami Ahiabenu II,President of Penplusbytes stated that “this learning opportunity  will not only build the capacity of the journalists but also bring journalists and CSOs together for a concerted effort towards advocacy, networking and partnership building in their quest to promote transparency and accountability in Ghana’s oil and gas revenue and resources”.
