Penplusbytes Signs 2 Year Oil and Gas Project Agreement with STAR-Ghana

  • Penplusbytes, the leading Ghanaian new media and digital technologies organization has been awarded an 18 month contract to undertake an oil and gas project dubbed ‘’Empowering the media to play an active role over oil and gas revenue and resources.’’
    The project, which is being funded by star-Ghana, will seek to improve the coverage of oil and gas stories by the Ghanaian media leading to an increase in the quantity and quality (in terms of in-depth and investigative reporting) of oil and gas stories thus leading to the media playing an effective watchdog role over Ghana’s Oil and Gas revenues and resources.
    During a signing ceremony to commence the project at the offices of STAR-Ghana on Thursday, the Director of Penplusbytes, Kofi Mangesi said, “the project aims at building the knowledge capacity of journalists on key oil and gas revenue and resource issues and also by facilitating knowledge exchange between the media and CSOs on key oil and gas revenue and resource issues using collaborative online platforms to enhance advocacy campaigns on oil and gas revenues and resources.”
    Also speaking at the event organized by Star Ghana, the Programs Manager, Mr. Ibrahim Tanko said the project was awarded due to the fact that “STAR-Ghana seeks to facilitate linkages and alliances within Civil Society, between Civil Society Organisations and also between Civil Society, media and parliament because it is our believe that it is in leveraging these partnerships that we can hold government to account in oil and gas revenues and resources.”
    The ceremony which was chaired by the STAR-Ghana steering Committee Chairman, Professor Akilakpa Sawyerr also had in representatives from STAR-Ghana’s donor partners (DFID, USAID, DANIDA and EU), the Oil and Gas grant partners and the press.
    Penplusbytes in the past couple of years has provided leadership in training journalists in the use of cutting edge new media technologies to enhance their work on various diverse thematic areas.. The organization has covered elections in 11 countries, including Ghana’s 2008 as well as the December 2012 elections, done post elections transparency and accountability projects at both the national and district levels.
