Perseus Mining Ghana Limited, a mining company located in the Wassa Amenfi East municipality in the Western Region, has handed over a health centre and nurses quarters to the Abena Abena Community.

The facilities were constructed at an estimated cost of GH¢494,000. The nurses’ quarters can accommodate four families.

The health facility comprises a consulting room, maternity ward, antenatal care unit, dispensary, children’s ward, male and female wards and a public health section, which will help with the smooth dispensation of medical services.

It forms part of the corporate social responsibility of the mining company to the host community.
Prior to the construction of the health facility, the people in the community travelled long distances for their health needs.

The company, which started operation in the area in 2012, had established a fund known as Edikan Gold Mine Trustee Limited to support the communities in the area.

The General Manager of the company, Stephen Kofi Ndede, said just after four months the centre became operational it had served 730 patients, including 25 successful child deliveries.

    Nurses urged

The Board Chairman of the company and the Omanhene of the Owirnkyiman Traditional Area, Ehunabobrim Prah Agyensaim, urged the nurses to work diligently to take care of the health needs of the people.

The Paramount Chief of Wassa Amenfi Traditional Area, Tetrete Okuamoh Sekyim, expressed gratitude to the company for the gesture and urged the communities to live in peace with the company, as well as the nurses, so the area could develop fast.
