  • President John Evans Atta Mills on Thursday gave the assurance that the Ghana Navy would maintain a strong maritime presence to check potential threats to the security of the oil and gas industry.

"The government has taken steps to enable the Ghana Navy to maintain a strong maritime presence," he said adding that the Ghana Air Force was also being equipped with transport aircrafts, surveillance planes and helicopters.

He gave the assurance in the 2011 State of the Nation address delivered to Parliament in Accra.

President Mills said the government’s intervention would: "Will enhance the capacity of the Ghana Armed Forces to ensure the country’s territorial integrity and provide safe sea passage to all legitimate traffic, combating illegal activities including bunkering, drug trafficking, poaching and pair trawling."

He said the Ghana Police Service with the help of other security agencies had clamped down on crime especially armed robbery and added that "the armed robbers are no longer operating with impunity".

President Mills said the recruitment of 3,200 personnel to beef – up the Police Service would make them fight crime with extra zeal.

"I am concern with cases of unsolved murder cases and I expect the Police Administration to seek help and collaboration where necessary," he said.

He said his call for fresh investigations into the serial killing of women from 1998 – 2000 was to ensure that government got to the bottom of the matter.

The President noted that fire outbreak continued to cause havoc throughout the country especially in the markets.

"In this action year, I expect District Municipal and Metropolitan Chief Executives to mount check on violations of regulations and bye-laws and remove unauthorised structures, which obstruct access to market drains and fire hydrants," he said.

Public institutions are also expected to follow up on fire reports and improve safety adding that the Ghana National Fire Service was expected to take delivery of a fairly large number of fire-fighting engines and gear for its personnel.

"I have put the security agencies on red alert and they are under strict instructions to deal decisively within the ambit of the law with anybody or group of persons who will attempt to disturb the peace and stability of this dear nation," he stated.

"We will not sit idle by and allow some persons to throw this country into a state of chaos just to satisfy self-centred and inordinate political desires," he said.
