  • The Association of Ghana Industries (AGI), in collaboration with the Ministries of Energy and Trade & Industry, have held a media launch on the second Domestic Content Matchmaking Exhibition and Conference in the Oil and Gas Industry, in Accra.

The purpose of the launch is to sensitize all stakeholders about the exhibition which comes off from 11-13 October, and it follows on the successful premier exhibition last year. “The thrust of our exhibition is to promote businesses between the local companies and the international oil and gas companies by ensuring that the capacities of local companies are enhanced to enable them take advantage of the opportunities presented,” AGI President Nana Owusu-Afari said.

In recent times, following the discovery and commercial production of oil, local content, which involves building a competitive supplier base and skilled work force, has become very topical. Government is in the process of finalizing a bill on local content for the nascent oil and gas industry.

The conference and exhibition also aims at according the country the opportunity to learn from other countries which have advanced on the learning curve of local content.
Additionally, the conference will showcase, for the first time in Ghana, state-of-the-art technologies in the industry, the presentation of papers on a globally acknowledged logistical feat in the country, on the production of first oil from the Jubilee Field within forty one months of striking oil and gas in commercial quantities.

Nana Owusu-Afari disclosed that a major innovation to this year’s programme has been the inclusion of foreign companies who could partner local companies in various aspects of the oil and gas value chain to strengthen their capacities in order to do effective businesses with the international companies. “Apart from the international companies that are already operating in the country who were involved in last year’s programmed, we are also targeting foreign companies involved in ancillary businesses in the oil and gas industry.

“Our experience has shown that there are several foreign businesses whose activities are not directly into drilling and production of oil, but provide various services needed by the industry,” Nana said. Nana mentioned that, international companies expected to participate include metal fabricators, chemical producers, and producers of basic machinery, among others.

The AGI president noted that a key element in local content policy is to maximise the use of local expertise, goods and services, job creation for people, businesses and financing in all aspects of the oil and gas industry value chain.

“Laudable as it may sound, the question remains as to whether local companies are ready to take up the challenge, and maximise the benefits of the oil find, hence the local content and matchmaking exhibition and conference,” Nana added.
