  • BOAKYE AGAKOREnergy Minister Boakye Agyarko has backed calls for Ghana to go solar as the country seeks to permanently solve its power crisis.

To that effect, he has disclosed that all ministries, departments, and agencies will be powered by solar energy.

Speaking at the launch of a Solar PV system at the German Cooperation House in Accra, on Thursday 23 March, he said: “In me you have a convert, simply because my own residence is simply converted to solar so that when the lights go off, it is only my residence in the neighbourhood that has light and nobody hears any sound of generators. It is all on the roof. I believe, at the personal level, in the importance of solar energy as an energy source.”

According to him, solar energy will yield a lot of benefits should the country take advantage of it.

“Today it is possible to generate solar energy at less than 60 pesewas per kilowatt hour, compared to what is paid the utility [services] to generate similar power for us (Ghanaians),” he noted.

He further disclosed that the Ministry would extend solar power to residential facilities and expand its usage across the country as a means to help solve the energy crisis.
