Technip partners RMU to develop skills for oil and gas sector

  • RMUTechnip, a leading global firm in project management, engineering and construction for the energy industry, has signed a three-year partnership with Regional Maritime University (RMU) to advance transfer of knowledge on the oil and gas industry to students of the University.

Under the partnership, Technip will periodically dispatch expert engineers to lecture and organise workshops for both students and lecturers, as well as sponsor some of the students’ research projects.

Also, eleven selected students grouped into teams of four have currently been assigned research topics, agreed upon by both parties as their final year project — with Technip providing the logistics and engineers, who will assist the students to ensure that the quality of the research is not compromised.

The firm also plans to absorb the final-year students working on projects linked to the partnership via internships after their graduation while some will be recruited for their national service and subsequently offered employment based on the company’s needs.

It is the desire of both parties that a well-trained Ghanaian crew should be onboard Technip vessels by close of the year 2015.

Country Manager of Technip Gauthier Pourcelle, speaking at a review meeting of the partners to evaluate the progress of the partnership and explore available options for further collaboration, said the initiative is the company’s way of developing a vibrant human resource base for the country’s buoyant hydrocarbon sector, as well as reaffirm its resolve to increase local content participation.

“Technip is committed to this partnership because, we believe that it is a means of creating opportunities to benefit all stakeholders in the industry,” he said.

He said, to further assist the University in the area of research and development, Technip will be looking into the possibility of providing technical training and expertise for the smooth running of the World Bank-funded oil and gas floor in the University.

Mr. Gauthier said Technip will also find a means of making the research facility available to players in the oil and gas industry to cut cost for companies and generate income for the University.

The floor is a research centre with ultra-modern facilities to aid the training of students in the area of oil and gas. Technip is committed to donating a number of computers to help in the same, and thus support a computer engineering workshop that will be set up by the university.

Deputy Rector of Regional Maritime University, Dr. Gibril Jaw, commended Technip for the positive collaboration and willingness to support the university’s development in the area of research and development.

He said the partnership will go a long way to equip students with the professional expertise and requisite skills they will require to work efficiently, as well as create a formidable human resource capital for the oil and gas sector.
