  • The Chairman of the Ghana National Petroleum Company (GNPC) Mr. Ato Ahwoi, has revealed that the development of Ghana depends massively on the production of gas, which will strengthen local technical skills in Ghana’s emerging oil and gas sector and also improve public management and regulatory capacity and enhance transparency.
He made this declaration at the third dialogue on the theme: ‘In-depth Assessment of Government’s Vision for the Use of Ghana’s Gas Potential’ at the second day of the Ghana Policy Fair on-going in Accra.

He said, Ghanaians for some time now, have focused their attention on oil production as being Ghana’s boost for development but, the fact is that Ghana produces just 1200 barrels of oil a day which is not enough as compared to what other countries (for instance, Nigeria -2.5 million barrels per day, Angola- 2.7 barrels per day) produce and as such Ghana needed to concentrate on how to increase its gas production to enhance its economy.

In the aspect of the Agricultural Industry, Mr. Ahwoi expressed delight in the fact that an agreement has been signed with India to establish a fertilizer industry with both parties owing 50 percent each and that they need both private and public sectors to be in partnership.

The Chief Petroleum Engineer of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation, Mr. Victor Sunu-Attah said one huge challenge in Gas production in Ghana, has to do with sending gas to the market without pipelines because Ghana has one pipeline from Nigeria to Kumasi hence the development of infrastructure to sell the gas.

As to what is being done to achieve the vision of the gas production, the GNPC is working with the people in the Jomoro District to put up a 14km deep water pipeline quickly since the vessels available for such jobs are not enough to build a gas processing plant, he added.

Mr Sunu-Attah revealed that the jubilee field is designed to produce 120 million cubic meters of gas.

The Presidential Candidate for the National Reform Party, Mr. Goose Tandoh, said gas is an important component of the strategy to reach 5000 mega watts by 2015 and that government needed to invite private partnership since it does not have enough fund for the production.

We do not have to use our energy consumption today to plan for the future but rather find a solution and also give a clear cut role for the Volta River Authority, Ghana National Petroleum Corporation and the Electricity Corporation of Ghana, he advised.

He encouraged the youth to have the best education to enable them to take up operations in the petroleum and gas field.
