The National Tanker Owners Association has welcomed moves by the National Petroleum Authority to install about 1,500 trackers on fuel tankers for the second phase of its tracker installation.
The moves are part of a policy directive by the NPA to track the movement of the tankers across the country with the use of volume sensors. This is expected to tell the accurate volumes of fuel products in transit at all times to prevent loses.

So far, about 1000 tankers have had the devices installed on them, enabling them to travel across the country to distribute the products.

An Executive Member of the Tanker Owners Association, Michael Tetteh in an interview with Citi Business News lauded the initiative adding that it will bring sanity to the sector.

”Some come from the North to take huge amounts of petroleum products back but they end up discharging the products right in Tema and still end up going for their claims.”

According to Mr Tetteh such a situation causes huge sums of monies to be lost in the value chain.

Meanwhile the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) says it has already started raking in some benefits from the trackers.

Public Relations Officer at the authority Yaro Kasambata says they have been able to apprehend vehicles with the trackers whose drivers had tried to deviate from their original zones with the help of the trackers.
