  • karpowerSince December 2015, commodities trading company, Trafigura, has delivered 30,000 tonnes of fuel oil per month to the Aysegul Sultan, the 225megwatts Karpowership in Ghana, under a 12-month contract.

A press statement by Trafigura, copied to the B&FT, said the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) took first delivery of fuel oil in December “under an innovative new arrangement that is contributing towards addressing the West African state’s persistent problems in generating adequate electric power.”

The release said through a tender process, the GNPC and Karpowership selected Trafigura to supply the fuel, which has enabled the Powership to generate electricity, “providing a quick, reliable, straight-forward solution to power outages.”

Interviewed in Accra recently, Josh Grizzle, Global Head of Fuel Oil Trading for the group explained: “We’re supplying a Powership with high quality fuel, and the electricity generated means the economy can develop uninterrupted. This is highly beneficial to Ghana, and we hope that other countries will soon see the benefits too.”

The release indicates that: “the project has not been without its challenges but it is now up and running. The Karadeniz Powership Aysegul Sultan, is docked in Port of Tema close to Accra, plugged into the Ghanaian national electricity grid, and has ramped up towards full generation capacity of 225 MW.”

Trafigura said the Turkish provider, Karpowership, which is part of the Karadeniz Holding based in Istanbul, “is by far the largest company building and operating Powerships anywhere, with an established track record in generating electricity in countries such as Iraq, Lebanon, Indonesia and Mozambique.”

The advantage of Powerships is that they offer a fast and flexible way of boosting generation capacity without needing to undertake the lengthy planning and heavy up-front capital expenditure required for an on-shore power plant,” it said.

“By helping the country generate electricity, you foster a more stable economic environment which is more beneficial for future economic growth, “says Josh Grizzle.

Trafigura reckons that given the list of countries with similar power-challenges, “it looks as though this model may be an important component in addressing the continent’s ever-increasing electricity supply needs.”

Karpowership is the only owner, operator and builder of the first Powership (floating power plant) fleet in the world. Since 2010, nine Powerships have been completed with total installed capacity exceeding 1,500 MW. Additional 6,000 MW of Powerships are either under construction or in the pipeline.

Karpowership’s current fleet supplies 15% of Southern Iraq, 27% of Lebanon, 22% of Ghana, 16% of Zambia and 31% of North Sulawesi, Indonesia’s total electricity generation with four more Powerships scheduled to be deployed throughout Indonesian Archipelago in 2016.

Karpowership is a member of Karadeniz Energy Group, Istanbul, Turkey. As of today, Karadeniz has more than 1,800 employees and is expanding through renewables, Powerships and other innovative energy supply solutions.
