AND MINING GOVERNANCE

Accra, Ghana

The Anglophone Africa Regional Extractive Industries Knowledge (REIK) Hub would like to inform interested individuals and organisations of its annual summer school on oil, gas and mining governance, which will take place 5-16 September 2016 in Accra, Ghana. The knowledge hub was established by the Natural Resource Governance Institute (NRGI) in collaboration with German International Development Cooperation (GIZ).

The summer school is open to the following groups: senior-level civil society activists and journalists/editors who cover extractive industry topics; youth activists; and traditional authorities who are engaged in the sector, as well as government officials, members of parliament and clerks serving in extractive industries-relevant parliamentary sub-committees.

Over the last five years, 212 participants from countries including Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Libya, Malawi, Mauritania, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, South Africa, South Sudan, Switzerland, Tanzania, UK, USA, Zambia and Zimbabwe have participated in the course.

The two-week residential course comprehensively covers the extractive industries decision chain.  It seeks to deepen knowledge and equip participants with the skills necessary to undertake independent analysis of fiscal and revenue management policies, EITI reports, contracts and key legislation in their own countries. Resource persons are seasoned experts from across the continent who have backgrounds in academics and activism.

For quality purposes, the total number of participants will not exceed 40. A limited number of places at the summer school will be fully funded by the organisers, but further participation is made possible through sponsorship from interested grant-making institutions. Grant-making institutions are therefore strongly encouraged to consider sponsoring staff from their recipient organisations to attend this course. The total cost for sponsoring a participant for the two-week course (including accommodation, food, tuition and field trip expenses) is USD 2,500. In addition to this, sponsoring institutions would need to cover separately visas, travel to and from the summer school, plus provide for any extra incidental expenses for their recipients.

Individuals interested in participating in this year’s summer school should complete the application form and all supporting documents no later than 30 June 2016. Further information, including a detailed course outline, will be sent to successful applicants by the end of July 2016.

To register your interest to be a sponsor, please contact the NRGI Africa program assistant, Rushaiya Ibrahim-Tanko ribrahim-tanko@resourcegovernance.org or the Africa deputy director, Emmanuel Kuyole ekuyole@resourcegovernance.org, or call +233 303 223815/+233 302242345.
