  • Chiefs in the Western Region are demanding 10 percent of Ghana’s total oil revenue.

The chiefs say they cannot allow the oil revenue to be used without any direct benefit to people in the Western Region.

The chiefs have sent a petition to Parliament for consideration.

Speaking to Joy News’ Parliamentary Correspondent, Sammy Darko on Wednesday, a spokesperson of the Western Regional House of Chiefs who is also the paramount chief of Essikado, Nana Kobina Nketiah said their petition is an “act of desperation” following years of marginalisation the region has endured.

Ghana, per her Jubilee partners struck oil in commercial quantities in 2007 in the Western Region.

According to the chief, even though the region is endowed with rich resources such as gold, timber and cocoa, it is still ranked as one of the most poverty endemic regions in the country.

He said having given up on the gold revenue, they have a right to demand a token of the oil revenue for the direct benefit of the people of the Western Region.

He explained that the 10 percent revenue will be used for the infrastructural development of the region which will positively affect the development of the entire country.

He dismissed a claim their demands could create divisions in the country, saying they are only demanding a mere 10 percent of the revenue and the entire country can have ninety percent.
