What you need to know about the Energy Minister, Mr Boakye Agyarko

    Mr. Boakye Agyarko, a policy advisor for the New Patriotic Party was recently named the Minister Designate for Ghana’s Energy Ministry by President Akufo-Addo.

    Mr Agyarko was born in 1956 in Kumasi.  He had his elementary school education at the K.O. Methodist Primary School at Ashanti New Town and the University of Science and Technology (UST) Primary School.

    He further continued to Mfanstipim School in Cape Coast in 1969 and to the University of Ghana, Legon in 1976 where he studied economics and political science, and graduated with B.A. (Hons) in 1979.

    Mr Agyarko has over the years served in different positions. He was once a National Secretary, National President, and National Coordinator of Ghana United Nations Students and Youth Association (GUNSA) in 1978, 1979 and 1980 respectively. He also joined Management & Investment Consultants Limited (MANCONSULT), a private economic and management consulting firm in Accra as a junior economist from 1981 to 1984.

    Boakye has an MBA in Finance from Pace University in New York City. Boakye Agyarko was also employed as a Professional Banker at the Bank of New York, where he served in the position of Vice President and then the head of Global Network Management for the Americans in the Investment Management and Services Division.

    Once he is vetted and approved as Energy Minister, his duties will include, among many things, improving the distribution of electricity across the country, especially to communities in rural Ghana. He must also work towards encouraging the participation of the private sector in the development of energy infrastructure and secure future energy supply, among others.
